William B. York
William B. York, 77, of 936 Dairy Road, Tamaqua, died Saturday in the home that he built. He was the husband of Mary A. (Haller) York.
He was a chemistry and earth science teacher at the Panther Valley High School for 28 years, and was a recipient of the Sally Mae Teacher Tribute and the Bausch and Lomb Science awards.
Born in Lansford, he was a son of the late William J. York and Arabella E. (Cox) York.
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served with the 25th Infantry Division.
York was graduate of Girard College and Temple University, Philadelphia, and did graduate work at Lehigh and Bloomsburg universities.
He was a former scoutmaster of Troop 137, Lansford; a past president of the Lansford Rotary Club; past director of the District 741 Leader's Rotary Camp; and a former coordinator of the Lansford Bloomobile and American Cancer Society events.
The deceased was a former lay speaker and district lay leader for the Anthracite District United Methodist Church and a church school teacher and elder at Christ Evangelical Free Church, Mahoning Township.
Surviving in addition to his widow are three stepdaughters, Sue Bachert of Allentown, Cindy Yingling of Glen Rock and Gwen Williams of Wilmington, Del.; four grandchildren, Nicole, Nicholas, Jared and Sean; and two great-grandchildren, Harley and Paige.
He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Beatrice Heffelfinger, Muriel Rudd, Virginia Roebuck and Elda Mae Heffner.
The Thomas J. Parambo Funeral Home, 54 W. Fell St., Summit Hill, is in charge of the arrangements.
